We built the main set within a closed ICU wing at St. Luke’s Hospital in Pasadena.
The setting is a women’s ward in a rundown extended care facility in Long Beach.
The feeling I was after was an orphanage for old people. As found the ICU was a
huge open space abandoned some time ago. We built out a main nurses station and
an open “quad” area, visiting areas, offices and medical support rooms incorporating details from the 1920’s on to the 1980’s within the build and dressing of the set to reflect the lifespans of the women in there. We built the set around a room to house video village because the show shot with multiple cameras 360 degrees. The palette was based on my grandmother’s lingerie – mixed shades of creams and peaches and pinks and whites. Those neutrals creating and envelope and then we controlled the use of dark blues and dark reds to enhance a feeling of nostalgia. This was a small show full of deliberate detail.
