SFC was shot in LA and in San Francisco for San Francisco. Working with the DP Cesar Chalone we gave each neighborhood in the story and its respective group of characters a defined palette. We begin the show in the Mission at night so it plays mostly as darks – absent a specific color. A white family is forced out of the Mission
by gentrification and winds up in the Hunters Point Projects, which are primarily African American. Hunters Point is former military housing right on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean. It naturally has a windswept bleached look and we exaggerated that and contrasted it with the mostly African American skin of its residents. The rival gang was from China town and we pumped up the red and color in LA Chinatown to play as SF. We built the interiors for Hunters Point in the same faded shades of green, blue and grey. We used reverse coloration on stop signs and cars so that in post the saturation could be dialed completely up or down.
